They decided to adapt the 1971-production Babu, which was directed by AC Trilokchander, and starred Sivaji Ganesan and Sridevi (as a child artiste).

“Babu was a remake of the Malayalam film Odayil Ninnu (1965), which was inspired from the Japanese movie Rickshaw Man (1958). Since Shalini was a popular child artiste then, we decided the story should revolve around her and Rajinikanth,” he elaborates.

“A film that Rajini sir had acted in prior to this one did not do well. So, the distributors came to me and requested that I reduce the distribution rates for this film. I assured them that I’d return the amount if the film did not do well. But they wanted us to sell at a lower price. So, I called up Muthuraman and told him what was happening. He is a producer’s director and always shoots economically. Still, I told him to avoid any wastage and he made the film well under the reduced budget,” he praises. “Some films will work only with a particular star. You only have to look at what happened to the Murattu Kaalai remake. This was why I refused when a popular actor approached me wanting to remake Anbe Vaa as it was a vehicle written specifically for MGR.
Similarly, I don’t think Raja Chinna Roja would work with any other star than Rajinikanth,” he signs off.
